For nearly 20 years, the STS Visual and Performing Arts After School Program has produced a full-length musical production every spring that showcases the talents of our 4th - 8th grade students. The spring musical has always been an opportunity for our students to develop their creative energy and enjoy the simple pleasures of live theater. Over the years, we have strengthened this notion of in over 300 cast members and have reached thousands of family members and friends as audience members.
How this Grant will Help:
A $50,000 "Power a Bright Future" grant will guarantee funding for St. Thomas' spring musical for the next five years. On average, each musical production costs about $10,000. This total accounts for rights acquisitions, musician fees, equipment rental, costume purchases and scenic expenses. St. Thomas the Apostle School, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has a student body of about 300. Of these, 85% qualify for free or reduced lunch and 92% receive financial assistance. Times are hard and the arts are always the first to go. And yet, we are committed to providing our students a solid education paired with an outlet that empowers and supports character development, boosts self-confidence, and allows for artistic expression and creativity. This grant will help us continue to be one of the few elementary schools in the area that provides students with arts related extracurricular programs where, sadly, our students may encounter crime, gang activity and drugs as part of their everyday lives. It is our goal to promote the arts and keep our students away from harm!
